Senator Gaya Goes for Deputy Senate President, Throws weight behind Secret ballot

Senator Kabiru Gaya, APC Kano South has declared intention to run for
office of Deputy Senate President.

Honourable Gaya while revealing this said his declaration is to bring stability to the system through his wealth of experience in both executive and the legislature.

Gaya, who is contesting for the position from Kano, North-west zone where President Muhammadu Buhari comes from disclosed that there was nothing wrong with him coming from the same zone, especially when the zone gave APC the highest votes in the last presidential election.

According to him, the South west produced Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the party has also zoned the position of Speaker of House of Representatives, while the exalted office of the Senate President is to emerge from the North-east. adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Senator Gaya equally threw his weight behind secret voting pattern used in 2015 at the inauguration of the 8th Senate.

Gaya’s comments came in reaction to recent protests and calls to the Senate to adopt the open ballot system in electing its presiding officers for the 9th Senate.

He stressed that the 2015 Senate Rule is the valid document for use at the election since it is the one currently in use.

According to Gaya, the process of amending the Senate Rules is such that a motion to that effect would be sponsored on the Senate floor and would vigorous consideration by the Senate.

He said, “Such motion must be presented before the end of the life span of this Senate and processed and approved. Anything outside that is outside the due process.

“Between 2011 Rule and 2015 Rule, which one comes last? the second one supercedes the first one.

“I am a member of the National Assembly who participated in putting these rules together. We cannot change it now unless a member of the Senate moves for that change.

“If he moves for the change and somebody seconds it, the motion will be debated and the same thing also in the House of Representatives. It will be debated.

“If there is discrepancy between the Senate and the House, we will set up a Conference Committee. And they will bring it to us to find a date to sit down and pass it. Can you do that in one month?”, he queried.

It was gathered that some lawmakers are becoming apprehensive over alleged pressure being mounted by certain political stakeholders on the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani Omolori, whose duty it is to conduct the election into Senate Presiding Officers, to adopt a different draft rule that permits the use of open ballot system.

Gaya said his aspiration to be Deputy President of the Senate is based on the fact that his North-west zone which produced the highest number of Senators of 21 deserved to be given the slot.

“He is receiving medical attention in one of the facilities in the state as a result of the trauma he went through,’’ Abutu said.

Informavores gathered that the Oba’s release from captivity was barely 24-hours after a family source confided in newsmen that the abductors demanded N20 million ransom as condition for his release. adsbygoogle || []).push({});

It was, however, not clear whether the family paid the ransom to secure the release of the traditional ruler who was whisked away last Thursday.

Oba Oyewumi was kidnapped in his palace by six gunmen who scaled the palace fence around 8.30PM., invaded his apartment and beat up everyone on sight, including the traditional ruler.

The kidnappers contacted the family last Saturday and demanded a N20 million ransom to secure his release.

ASP Abutu said the command was not aware of any ransom paid.

“All I can say is that his freedom was facilitated by the concerted actions taken by the police and other security agencies,’’ he said.

Ekiti State’s Amotekun Corps Commander, retired Brig-Gen. Joe Komolafe, said that the release of the traditional ruler was secured at a place in Obbo Ayegunle, Ekiti Local Government area of Kwara with the help of the Kwara vigilance group.

“When we went into the bush, we tracked the traditional ruler to the area, the Vigilantes from Kwara State joined our team and we were able to rescue his release.

“No ransom was paid. We have brought him home and he is currently receiving medical attention,’’ Komolafe said.
