While the dust have settled and the new speaker of 9th Assembly has been elected, we take a look back at Hon.Femi’s journey to the apex position of the green chamber.
Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila,representing surulere 1 federal constituency Lagos state emerged speaker after a landslide victory over Hon.
Gbajabiamila who was the Party’s choice emerged victorious after polling a total of 283 votes to defeat Hon. Bago who trailed with 76 votes.
Born on June 25,1962, Hon. Femi after finishing his elementary and secondary education in Lagos state, proceeded to the United kingdom for his ‘A Levels’.
He then returned to Nigeria and enrolled into the University of Lagos and subsequently graduated with honors.
He then proceeded to the Nigerian law school and was called to Bar in 1984. Hon.femi eventually established his law firm before travelling to the United states to further his education.
Hon.femi started his political career when he joined Alliance for Democracy(AD)and won his first term as a member of House of Reps in 2003.
He contested again in 2007 and was elected on the platform of Action Congress(AC). He also became the leader and minority whip of the house. He again contested and won a third time on the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN)in 2011. In 2014, he was instrumental to the merger that gave birth to APC. He was later elected for the 4th time in 2015 and having been endorsed by APC for the speakership position, He contested for the house of reps speakership position and he lost to Hon.Yakubu Dogara. He however,was elected as the House Leader after losing the speakership position.
He was also endorsed for the speakership position after being re-elected for the 5th time.
Hon.Femi Gbajabiamila emerged the Speaker of the House of Reps on June 11th 2019.
