Censors Board trains, gives grant to 100 youths in Nasarawa State

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has conducted training for 100 youths, drawn from different Local Government in Nasarawa State, on ventures in the movie industry and provided them with start-up packs.

The youths,including young filmmakers, were trained by officials of the board and other stakeholders as ‘Community Ambassadors’ of the NFVCB against unclassified films and on key subjects towards a successful career in filmmaking at the event held on Monday at Canal Olympia Site in Mararaba.

The young ‘Ambassadors’, especially those in film business, were empowered with startup grants and certificates by the NFVCB at the end of the training.

Mr Adedayo Thomas, Executive Director of the board, said that the event tagged “ Revisiting the Fundamentals of Cinema Culture” is part of the board’s Media Literacy and Empowerment initiative for young thespians across Nigeria.

“In other to support the empowerment of youths in the Nasarawa state, in line with the youth friendly policies of the President Buhari led Federal Government, the National Film and Video Censors Board selected the state as a beneficiary of its ongoing capacity building on Film Classification and Censorship for youths in North Central.

“As the key regulator of the Nigerian motion picture industry, the board has decided to bring practical knowledge of how to be successful in the sector to these passionate youths.

“As part of the empowerment initiative, we have brought experts from the academia and seasoned practitioners in the industry, to train these selected 100 youths .

“They will be trained on the role of NFVCB as well as the job openings in the film and video sector, and empowerment packs to aid the new roles as Ambassadors of the Nigerian Film Industry is to be given to them,”he said.

Thomas described the training as timely, and a prelude to the opening of the ongoing construction of a 300-seater capacity Green Multipurpose Cinema by CanalOlympia in Mararaba.

He added that the cinema, when completed would create jobs for youths in the state and beyond,and that made the training more useful.

Mr Simon Minkowski,Vice President of CanalOlympia worldwide, said the cinema isdesigned to be a space for talent incubation and platform for emerging talents, and would be ready for operation in November this year.

In his speech, the Governor of the State, Engr Abdullahi Sule expressed appreciation to the NFVCB for bringing the training to the state.

The Governor, who was represented by Mr Kwanta Yakubu, his Senior Special Assistant on Youth Development and NGO, however urged the beneficiaries to make maximal use of the experience and resources they received from the programme.

“I commend the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) for this initiative aimed at sensitizing our youths and women on the imperative of film classification and censorship, including the various opportunities in the film and video sector which our youth could leverage to empower themselves for self-reliance and prosperity,”he said.

Daddy Showkey, a veteran Nigerian singers, has expressed disappointment over the prolonged rift between twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye of P-Square fame, saying the duo have destroyed what is the biggest music brand Africa has ever produced.

Daddy Showkey revealed this during an interview with Goldmyne TV, opining: “P-Square destroyed the biggest brand that Africa produced. P-Square isn’t for them alone.”

He stressed that entertainers owe their success to the public, noting that fans should always be considered in major decisions.

Drawing from his personal experience, he said, “As an entertainer, I can decide to lock myself in my room and celebrate my 50 years on stage. I am celebrating because it is the people that made me Daddy Showkey. If the people have made you, you are not considering them but considering how much you guys are making.”

He warned that the consequences of the brothers’ ongoing feud would become clearer with time, adding that their relationship should take precedence over their differences.

“Dragging themselves like this, the future will tell. No matter what, you guys are brothers. No matter what, you should look for a place to resolve things because you have children. Tomorrow you will carry this beef to your children,” he warned.

Daddy Showkey’s comments come amid the lingering public dispute involving Peter, Paul, and their elder brother Jude, who previously managed the music duo. But their escalating disagreements have occasioned a court matter that may deepen the feud. The disagreements have continued to attract public attention.

AFRO Awards 2025: Film Director Lauds Philanthropists, Organizations on Humanitarian Services

A US based Film Director, Taiwo Oduala, has commended the unprecedented achievements and humanitarian services being rendered to the less privileged by philanthropists and corporate organisations.

Oduala gave the commendation while speaking with newsmen on Monday in Lokoja.

The Nigerian born film director, who hosts the Afro Awards in Los Angeles, America, said life is all about service to God and humanity, no matter how low or highly placed in the society.

He said that love for mankind that some individuals and organizations are displaying across the globe gave birth to the Afro Awards four years ago.

The founder and executive producer of the Afro Awards, said the awards were solely aimed to recognize and honor individuals, who have demonstrated exceptional humanitarian excellence in various fields.

“The first event was held on Nov. 6, 2022, at Regal La Live, 1000 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, California and hopefully by Oct. 24, we shall be holding the 4th edition of the award.

“The Afro Awards has hosted and honored over 5,000 individuals since its inception, recognizing their contributions to humanitarianism and philanthropy in American and African communities alike, ” he said.

According to him, 2025 event promises an unforgettable evening of glitz, glamour, and powerful recognition of individuals who have made outstanding contributions to humanity, leadership, arts, entertainment, and global excellence.

He added, “AFRO Awards is an international celebration dedicated to honoring the achievements of individuals and organizations that exemplify humanitarian values and excellence in their respective fields.

“Looking at the past honorees including global icons, philanthropists, and change-makers, we believe the AFRO awards will continue to stand as a symbol of unity, inspiration, and cultural pride.”

Juwon Olorunipa popularly known as Jumabee has solicited the support of Media Professionals in Kogi State for the success of the event.

Briefing Journalists at the NUJ Press Centre in Lokoja on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025; Hon. Juwon Olorunipa disclosed that activities lined up for the event will commence on Thursday 19th June 2025 with the Album Listening of his latest release, Son of Margaret at Golden Royale Hotel Lokoja.

According to him, the first Kogi Entertainment Summit will hold the following day at AKK Hotels Lokoja with talks on how to boost music, fashion, event planning and movie industries in the State.

He also told newsmen that Jumabee Inspires Concert will be held on Saturday 21st June 2025 at the Children Amusement park, Lokoja by 7pm with over forty home based Superstars performing live and other international singers.

He further stated that Jumabee Inspires Concert is now attracting people from all walks of life and changing the narrative about the Confluence State, saying the State remains the best in the North Central.

Hon. Jumabee, who is the Special Adviser on Art and Culture to the Kogi State Governor, said that the Entertainment Summit is aimed at raising the consciousness of the people on the need to embrace and invest in Entertainment

The Governor’s Aide added that the Concert which started six years ago was carried out to mark his birthday as a way of adding value to the State Entertainment Industry.

He revealed that many students across the three Senatorial Districts of the state will be offered scholarship at the Concert while 150 youths will be trained on several skills acquisition programmes.

He had earlier paid a Courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhaji Seidu Ademu who endorsed  the Concert and commended him for projecting Kogi State to the world.
