A Professor of Transport Geography, Federal University Lokoja (FUL) Adetunji Musilimu Adeyinka has called for the introduction of mass transit and light rail transport system in Nigerian cities and other African countries to reduce traffic congestion

Professor Adeyinka also called on the federal and state government to construct and rehabilitate the existing roads to accommodate modern vehicular traffic in order to address the incessant gridlock in cities and state capitals.

Professor Adeyinka made the call while while delivering the 30th Inaugural lecture series of the Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State with the titled “Unplanned Cities: The Dilemma of Transport Planning and Development in Nigeria”

According to him, there should be provision of some basic transport facilities such as pedestrian walkways, Zebra crossing and street lights, maintaining that the provision of pedestrian walkway will encourage students to walk to schools and make them healthier.

“It is necessary to encourage the design and construction of bicycle paths that will run alongside the main roads. This will reduce the pressure on public transport and personal vehicles. The bicycle is seen as an ecological and low-cost alternative to meet the mobility needs of people.

“This mode of transportation is common in European countries most especially in the Italian city of Venice and Braga in Portugal” he advised.

While calling on the three tiers of government in Nigeria to
prioritize routine maintenance of road networks, Professor Adeyinka stated that through regular sensitisation of citizens and sanitation exercises, there will be a change in the attitude of citizens towards the maintenance of road transport infrastructure and drainage facilities to enhance free flow of water.

Speaking on the introduction of
mass transit and light rail in Nigeria, the Professor of Transport Geography said “This will, no doubt, reduce the volume of vehicular movement on roads.

“These modes of transport are more environmental friendly and sustainable for urban mobility compared to large number of para-transit modes of transportation.

“The operation of motorcycles and tricycles should be restricted to the feeder roads because, apart from the fact that they carry few passengers, their operation on highways poses significant safety risks. Their mode of operation is worrisome as they mingle and compete with heavy-duty vehicles on highways” he stated.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi in his speech congratulated Professor Adeyinka on his academic milestone, describing the lecture as timely and topical subject, in view of the rapid pace of urbanization and the many challenges associated with city growth and mobility in our country.

He expressed concern over the worsening condition of federal roads across the country, appealing to the federal government to rehabilitate Kabba -Ilorin road to ease vehicular movement.

While acknowledging and appreciating the family of the inaugural lecturer for their support, encouragement and sacrifices they have contributed to the academic journey of Professor Adeyinka, the Vice Chancellor also thank those who have contributed in one way or another for success story of the university don.
