Ogoni Land: Supremacy Tussle Responsible for Killings, Issued Cultists, Others Ultimatum to Disarm – Stakeholders

Killings in Ogoni land, especially in Khana Local Government area have been attributed to supremacy tussle, cultism, and armed banditry among others.

This was revealed by Chief Baridam and other stakeholders on Monday, April 22, 2019 during a multi-stakeholders’ meeting under the auspices of the Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers of Ogoni “to discuss security and other important issues affecting Ogoni as an ethnic nationality”. adsbygoogle || []).push({}); adsbygoogle || []).push({});

His Royal Highness, Mene Suanu Baridam said, “traditional rulers have not failed in their responsibility to ensure peace in their domains as being insinuated by some speakers but “what we have is followership failures”.

Chief Baridam tasked stakeholders to find out why the killings in Ogoniland is concentrated in Khana local government area. He said that “who wants to take control” of the local government area such that supremacy is being demonstrated leading to the killings.

Speaking on behalf of the Bari-ara Kpalap-led Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Chief Prince Biira advocated for committees to be set up to handle issues bordering on reconciliation, working with traditional rulers to achieve peace in their domain.

In his speech, Chief Bebe Okpabi decried divisions among Ogoni leaders, and warned against commercial activism in Ogoniland. He thereby called for unity and respect for traditional institutions so as to enable them perform their roles as traditional leaders effectively.

The stakeholders at the end of the meeting resolved among others to issue a two weeks ultimatum from the date of the conference, to cultists and other armed group all over Ogoniland to disarm.

The statement that was widely circulated and received by the Informavores said “The stakeholders resolved among many others that two weeks from the date of conference, those who are cultists and perpetrating violence and killings all over Ogoniland should submit their fire arms to their traditional rulers for onward submit to security operatives and failure to do so, the person or group of persons would be declared persona non-grata in Ogoniland.”

Resolution also include setting up committees to address issues among the Ogoni people such as forming a joint task force that would police Ogoniland and ensure that there is peace and security in the area, sending a high-powered delegation to the Federal Government and the Police high authorities on security in Ogoniland, and for the need to establish more Police Stations in Ogoniland, especially in Khana local government area that has just one Police.

The meeting is expected to be a continuous process to assess the progress and challenges for a way forward in Ogoniland till a holistic peace and security returns.

The Igala Cultural And Development Association, ICDA North Central Coordinator, Prince Oruma Musa has sent a message of congratulations to Igala muslim faithfulls in the North-central as they celebrate the eid-el-fitr. push({});

Prince Oruma congratulate Igala muslims as they completed the Ramadan fasting urging them to continue to abide by the teachings during the ramadan fasting.

“The patience and perseverance exercised during ramadan fasting is a sacrifice that will be rewarded with blessings from Allah”, he said.

He further express shock over the sudden death of former governor of Kogi State, Alh Idris Wada son, Mohammed Ibrahim Idris who died after eid-el prayer at his Abuja residence.

The deceased was a former member of House of Representative, represented Omala, Ankpa and Olamaboro in the 7th Assembly.

In a message conveyed by special adviser on media, Prince Abdulrahman Obaje, Prince Oruma said he is deepely saddened by the death of Muhammed.

“On behalf of myself and the good people of the Igala Kingdom, North-central Zone, I wish to express our deep condolence over the death of your son, I am deeply saddened by his death. He is a young Nigerian full of promises for the future of Nigeria”. He said.

He said the death has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill, urging the family he left behind to take solace in the fact that the late Muhammed live a life worthy of emulation.
He prayed that the Almighty Allah grant the dead eternal rest in Aljanat Firdaos.

He further reiterate his commitment towards the advancement of ICDA , saying that we should all intesify prayers and commitment, while all hands on deck to see that ICDA get out of its current predicament.

Igala Cultural and Development Association (ICDA) National President, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq has debunk rumour making the round on social media that the leadership of the apex social-cultural group of the Igala nation (ICDA) has approved an unpopular movement. push({}); adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Abubakar made this known in his first podcast after the Kogi governorship election held November 11th, 2023 and received by The Informavores!, saying that he did not hold any meeting with anybody approving any unpopular movement.

In his message that was passed in Igala Language and roughly translated, he said in part that, “There is rumour making the round and our people have been calling me left and right concerning some people that ICDA held meeting with or append signature for approval so that they can go to VIPs of Kogi State. “

”All that rumour is not true. We did not hold meeting with anybody and ICDA did not sign any agreement of approval with anybody”.

“And there is no any Igala son/daughter in this trial time that would volunteer to lead such movement. For this reason, as far as we are concern, all that rumour is not true”

“And so, don’t be deceived and misled by mischief makers.”

Recall that the Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja in the petition filed by Social Democratic Party, SDP and its candidate, Muritala Ajaka is still ongoing and the rumoured movement may not be unconnected with it.

Abubakar further revealed and reassured that preparation is in top gear to elect new executives members that would pilot the affairs of ICDA in a short period of time.

He concluded his message with prayers and admonish the teaming populace to be more prayerful and steadfast.
